Sometimes people discover hobbies late in life. In fact, it is not uncommon that people will take up sportive and active hobbies well into middle age. Some may find this surprising but in reality there are very few active hobbies that are age restrictive. Yet, most people assume there is. This is a shame because such an attitude will dissuade people from taking advantage of new hobby opportunities.

Surfing, for example, is an active hobby that most associate with youth. Part of the reason for this is that books or magazines on surfing often feature a young, ripped 20-something surfer riding a huge wave. Such imagery would seem to stress surfing is a sport activity for the young. Thus, trying to learn the hobby later in life would be impossible to due to the extreme demands. That is a wildly inaccurate assessment derived from the attempt by the magazines/books to present a superhero image of the surfer. While this sells publications successfully it also drives away many potential students of the activity.

Really, anyone who is in decent physical shape can learn the basics of how to surf. If one understands the basic concept of balance and maintaining composure on the board, the person can learn to surf. This does not refer to advanced surfing tricks, but as far as riding mellow sand-bar breaks anyone can have fun with surfing. None of this is overly complicated nor is it age specific. As such, there is no reason to not embark on surfing lessons out of fear of being too old.

This does however bring about the obvious question: How does one learn to surf? Well, here is the way how not to learn: by reading a book on the subject or watching an instructional DVD. That is not a knock on these educational items. They are all excellent supplemental material. They are not, however, a substitute for actual experience and proper instructions. Thankfully, there are a number of excellent instructors out there who can instill solid basics in beginner students regardless of age.

Most surfing schools offer group, private and semi-private lessons. Group lessons are often the lowest cost option and they provide a nice overview of the basics. Perhaps it might be wise to try a private lesson at first to see if surfing is for you. (Private lessons can cost anywhere from $50 to $150 an hour depending on the instructor). This way you can start off on your surfing journey on the right foot. Private and semi-private lessons also provide closer one on one attention. This will allow for much faster learning however no one will learn the basics of surfing overnight. A decent amount of time and practice will be required to develop decent skill. But, that\'s ok because once you get the hang of it, it will become a lifelong hobby.

So, never feel that age is an impediment to learning how to surf. In reality, it is not and anyone can learn to surf regardless of age. Really, the only impediment keeping your from learning how to surf is yourself!
