Traveling abroad to Europe is very exciting but at times it can be a little bit hectic. Make sure you prepare yourself so you can maximize the amount of time you have to relax and enjoy your vacation, rather than think about the items you forgot to bring with you and wish you have prepared in advance.

Before you make your travel plans you should make sure your passport is not expired and double check that you have all the necessary paper work for travel visas.

A good tip for safety is to make copies of your itinerary and leave a copy with a good friend or family member in case of an emergency while you are away, should you need to be contacted. You can store the other copy in your cabin or ship safe just in case your wallet or purse gets lost or stolen.

Read up on the local customs of the countries you're planning on visiting. This is very important if you want to avoid any embarrassing situations and will make for a smoother trip, especially when you interact with the locals. A simple check on the internet or a few questions to the staff aboard your cruise ship should cover your bases.

Pack your bags a few days in advance and make sure they're not to big to carry around or fit in the ship's storage compartments. Many companies have rules about the size of luggage you can carry, so make sure you double check those before you leave your house. Just in case you're so excited and might forget, here's a helpful check list of the items you should bring, but could accidentally leave out:

- Your passport, up to date

- Visas, for the ports of call you plan on visiting

- Cruise ship paper work, such as forms, tickets, luggage tags, etc.

- Identification, it may be a good idea to carry a drivers license or ID card in addition to carrying your passport.

- Cash and local currency, in case your credit card is not accepted, and you want to buy a quick snack, drink, souvenir, or a taxi ride.

- Credit card, for purchases on board the cruise ship and at a port

- Variety of clothes and foot wear for different temperatures, you will experience a variety of climates and air conditioned spaces. It is also a good idea to bring a few formal outfits for more elegant settings. Again, check the local customs for places of worship and prepare clothing accordingly.

- Sun protection, sun glasses, sunscreen, lip balm.

- Carry your emergency contact information on you at all times.

- Dictionary and translation guide for common sayings in the countries you will visit, this will make for more interesting interaction with the many people you will encounter.
